Included on most of the "best-of" lists of last century fantasy, science ficiton and children's books. Original maroon cloth, front panel stamped in gold and blind, spine panel stamped in gold. Professionally rebacked in matching cloth with original covers and spine laid down and with binding resewn and original endpapers preserved and laid down over new linen hinges. Gilt spine lettering dulled, name on endpaper, and scattered mild staining; otherwise, with the professional repair a very good or better copy lacking the dust jacket.
Covers are rubbed at the spine ends and corners, with some water spotting. Spine is dulled, with a vertical crease. Interior hinges are untouched, but the book appears shaken, with some signatures slightly proud. Owner's inscription on the fep, and below the text on the last page. McClurg gave permission to Burt to reprint Burrough's first five books in a cheaper edition the year after publication. This copy is especially crisp and clean, and has a dust wrapper with a wrap-around design by Fred J. Arting, featuring a silhouette of Tarzan, which also appears in the frontispiece. Early Printing. Burt Early printing circa is Zueschner's with frontis and credited wraparound dust jacket by Fred Arting and a dark green cloth cover with black decoration and titling double bordered in blind. The original title page as frontis and dedication pages are present. The wrap around dj is bright, unfaded and complete with a hint of wear at tips and corners.
It is the green variant. The book has some light page edge tanning noted, else clean, tight and unmarked. Seldom seen so clean. Additional photos on request.. Burt, . Issued from the plates of the McClurg first edition with its copyright page but with a new title page and frontis based on the original McClurg title page. Near fine with only the barest wear to green cloth boards. The cover is lettered in black and there are no lines on the cover; in dust jacket with some minor edge wear and a few chips at spine ends.
Robert Zeuschner calls for the Burt first printing to be lettered in white and to have embossed lines on cover--this copy doesn't but it does have ads for only Harold Bell Wright titles in the back, and the latest one advertised is a Wright title. Pages are tanned. Clean, tight pages. Strong binding. No inscriptions. No dust jacket. Book is cocked. Rear inner hinge reglued, front inner hinge starting to split. Binding is mostly cracked between pages and Several leaves are missing the upper outer corners. Pages 55 to 58 have discoloration to the lower half, less so on adjacent leaves. Scattered pages have very small edge smudges. Front cover has slight wear to the outer corners and slight rubbing to the lettering. Spine has slight wear to the ends and to the front edge. Spine lettering is mostly rubbed away.
Pages have very slightly browned edges. Later edition. Burt, undated. Octavo, early edition, pp. Complete with one of the few surviving original dust jackets. It is in one piece and no repairs have been attempted. Boards are rubbed at edges with a few finger smudges, both hinges cracked, free front endpaper and half-title are loose. Overall fair to good. Size: Octavo standard book size. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting.
